We set off north along the I95 to Cape Cod in cool and overcast weather, but not threatening rain. The roads all along the way were lined with trees and it felt very much like England. Even the signs along the way were from another place: Essex; Swansea; Bedford.
Occasionally the trees would clear and we'd cross over a bridge with a spectactular view of a small city and harbour. Then back to the tree-lined highway.
After Providence we were in Cape Cod and we proceeded along the Mid-Cape Highway. We reached the end of the cape and rolled into Provincetown and were greeted by a fantastic scene: a quaint, wooden-house fishing village with a narrow, bustling main street full of colourful characters.
Because we felt we were in such a unique place which had taken some effort to reach, and having no real reason to continue the next day north of Boston before heading west, we decided to spend two nights in this town and take a day to explore it further.
We found an interesting hotel on a hill above the town and freshened up before walking back down to Commercial Street, the centre of the activity. There we had a wonderful dinner at Betsy's Bayside Restaurant washed down with Mojito cocktails.
Starter: Seared tuna on nachos with wasabi and hummus with pita slices
Main course: shallot-stuffed haddock and shrimp linguini
Tomorrow we'll explore the town further.
