We re-examined our plans and decided that because of the extra distance (100+ miles) we'd have to do due to staying in Provincetown that it would be a stretch to reach the Catskills and be there in a state to enjoy the ride, we'd rather take a more direct route to Washington. I just picked Poughkeepsie as a place that was a manageable distance (300 miles) in the right direction and we set off on the interstates.
The interstate highways are quite amazing: an interconnected system of 2/3/4 lane highways on which you can travel quickly (65mph) to almost anywhere in America. You take an off ramp from one to change direction and you're on another. The Massachusetts/Connecticut/New York highways we rode on are all tree-lined and moved smoothly and quickly.
For Steven: these tree everywhere must be the ones you meant. At the moment some have an orange blush, but they are all still about 90% green, so I think it will be about a month before it is possible to experience the splendour of riding through a stunning orange and red tableau.
We approached Poughkeepsie around 6pm and found ourselves a hotel for the night.
We've also decided that, because we are much further south than we originally intended to be, we can make Washington tomorrow (500km). That way we gain an extra night and can spend three nights in Washington. We've also thought that after that we'd like to spend one night in Philadelphia and two nights in Atlantic City.
