We are certainly going to be the most wired (or wireless) that we have ever been on any trip. With the emphasis on small and portable, our collection of gadgets that we intend so far to take looks like this:

  1. Nokia N95 8Gb
    • Including South African SIM with roaming enabled.
    • Use for direct contact with home and emergencies.
  2. HTC Desire
    • Quick mobile connectivity when needed.
    • Share a local SIM card with Vaio (4).
  3. American Power Adapter
    • Power for Vaio (4) from which all other devices will be charged.
  4. Sony Vaio VPC-W219AG Netbook
    • 10.1", 1366x768 screen, Atom processor.
    • Built-in 3G aerial. Will purchase a local SIM card for the duration of our trip.
    • 320Gb hard drive. Also taking 1Tb portable drive for backup and additional storage.
    • Full WiFi capabilities.
    • Find sights, hotels, laundromats, etc. wherever we are.
    • Update this blog :)
  5. ContourHD 1080p Helmet Cam
    • 16Gb SD card (4 hours of video) and 3 hour battery + 2 hour spare battery.
    • Won't have time or processing power to edit video on the trip, but will have enough disk space to store daily footage.
    • Charges from USB.
  6. Garmin Zumo 400
    • Will have MapSource on the Vaio to update routes and waypoints on a daily basis.
    • Motorcycle mount and power cable. Dubbelju and Jupiters will provide RAM mounts for the holder.
  7. iPod Nano
    • Charges from USB.
  8. Canon SX120 Camera
    • Compact superzoom camera.
    • 4GB SD card.
    • Takes standard AA batteries, so shouldn't have any problem powering it.
