After more than a month of fiddling with the Blogger template and suffering from what David Wong would describe as Effort Shock, I think I'm in a position to make the first flurry of posts to this blog, and will tune the look and feel as I go along.
I want to create this blog as a personal diary for our upcoming motorcycle tour to the USA, how it came about, what it takes to get it organised, but especially to post updates while on the road as I know how difficult it is to do it retrospectively when you get back. Already I have some catching up to do...
Cathy and I have done two longish motorcycle tours before this: 14 days in Italy in 2004 and 14 days circumnavigating South Africa in 2008. Wondering where we should go next, and having been to the USA in 1998 for the Borland Developer Conference, I convinced Cathy that the USA would be a great destination. Why not? It's a First World country, English speaking with a great infrastructure and many amazing natural and man-made sights to see.
So a few days after the "Yes! Let's do it!" moment, I was re-arranging the folders on my hard drive and saw one called "Celtic Rock". Not remembering what I had saved there I loaded the folder into Winamp and the first song that played was "To America We Go" by Ashley MacIsaac (one of those freaky coincidences that I notice more and more as I get older and convince me of some unknown order in the universe) - hence the name of this blog.
Now that I've managed to write the first real post, I can try to catch up in the order that events have occurred so far and then it will be easier to maintain this blog.
